The Hospital for Sick Children Foundation receives $1 million donation to fund Clinical Scholar in Paediatric Nerve Injury

The Hospital for Sick Children Foundation today announced it has received a $1 million donation to fund a Clinical Scholar in Paediatric Nerve Injury. The donation represents the first gift to the precedent-setting SickKids Clinical Scholar Program designed to provide research funding to recruit and retain the world’s best paediatric physicians and surgeons.

The $1 million donation by the CHIN UP Fund, Henry Vehovec, Founder and Chair, will be matched by $500,000 from The Hospital for Sick Children Foundation to create a $1.5 million endowment. The Government of Ontario will match the income from the endowment annually.

“Major donations like the one by the CHIN UP Fund mean The Hospital for Sick Children can recruit and retain world leaders in paediatric research. We can sustain our ability to remain a world force in paediatric health care,” says Dianne Lister, president of The Hospital for Sick Children Foundation.

The creation of the SickKids Clinical Scholar in Paediatric Nerve Injury will help ensure world class research into children’s nerve injuries. It is estimated that 1 in 500 children suffer from motor nerve problems or conditions. Injuries to the peripheral nerves can be devastating. They can lead from temporary dysfunction to total paralysis. Occasionally these types of injuries are associated with severe pain.

The Hospital for Sick Children is Canada’s most research-intensive hospital and the largest centre dedicated to improving children’s health in the country.

Background:

The Hospital for Sick Children Clinical Scholar Program

The long-term goal of The Hospital for Sick Children is to assemble the greatest concentration of paediatric expertise in the world. The SickKids Clinical Scholar Program is The Hospital for Sick Children Foundation’s leveraged-gift initiative to provide research funding to help recruit and retain the most talented paediatric physicians and surgeons.

The SickKids Clinical Scholar Program creates 20 Clinical Scholar positions to be funded by individuals and corporate major gift donors. Each Clinical Scholar position requires a gift of $1 million over five years that will be matched with $500,000 from The Hospital for Sick Children Foundation to create a $1.5 million endowment. The Government of Ontario will match the income from the endowment annually.

The SickKids Clinical Scholar Program demonstrates that the hospital, together with the Government of Ontario, places a high priority on attracting and retaining the best paediatric clinician-researchers.

The financial support by the Government of Ontario for the SickKids Clinical Scholar Program is part of the Alternative Funding Program (AFP) signed in 2001 by the Province, The Hospital for Sick Children and The Hospital for Sick Children Foundation. The AFP formally recognizes the need for SickKids to compete internationally for highly skilled and educated physicians and surgeons.

The $80 million agreement allows The Hospital for Sick Children to provide quality patient care, and provide physicians with dedicated time to enhance teaching and research. This represents a significant benefit to academic physicians.
